Buah Sukun or Sukun fruit or in English Bread Fruit or buah roti in Malay.
About Breadfruit..
Breadfruit is a very popular fruit that originates out of the flowering species. Scientifically known as ‘Artocarpus Altilis’, the breadfruit plant is a member of the ‘mulberry family’, thus making it a variance of mulberry. Native to the Malay Peninsula and the western Pacific Islands, the fruit’s shape, size and feel is unlike any typical fruit, as it looks like bread.”
Many Malaysian are not familiar with this fruit called Sukun. It’s a big tree with big leaves.
I have never seen Sukun in any of our fruit stall, pasar malam or even supermarket or hypermarket.
Have you seen these fruits before?
We are fortunate to taste Sukun when we passed by a corner house and this nice Pak Cik (uncle) gave us one after we ask him whether we can take one. He even teach us how to fried Buah Sukun, using flour to fried into “Fried Buah Sukun” or BreadFruit Fritters.
The very thought crossed our mind is Fried??!!
We are not so much into fried food, so my husband and I thought of eating it in its most natural form. Therefore, we waited for few days.
By day 3, outer layer is very soft.. feels like poking your fingers into a dough, while some of the inner layer are not too ripe. Perhaps we should cut it after day 5 or so.
How does a Sukun taste like?
Taste sweet when it’s fully ripe. Just like eating jackfruit (cempedak) or durian. It’s flesh is yellow, cream in colored, which is sweet with a nice fragrant smell.
